How ResurFX Laser Skin Resurfacing Differs from Other Laser Treatments

Also referred to as laser skin resurfacing, fractional laser therapy is used when surface-level skin cells need to be exfoliated to improve the skin’s quality and appearance. Rather than targeting a specific area, the fractional laser device can be used across the face to reveal healthy new skin layers below the dermis.

While some other laser skin treatments are conducted using infrared light, fractional laser therapy can be compared with either a CO2 laser or an erbium laser. The CO2 laser uses short, concentrated bursts of light energy to remove the top-most layers of skin and be used to target a variety of skin issues, including scars, wrinkles, enlarged pores, and warts.

At Aesthetically Yours, our Thousand Oaks cosmetic specialists have invested in some of the latest laser technology to provide patients with effective care and lasting results. When it comes to laser resurfacing treatments, we have chosen to use ResurFX Laser Skin Resurfacing for its stunning results and its adjustable settings. We can change the shape, size, and direction of the dots, which helps us target problem areas with more precision.

How ResurFX Fractional Laser Therapy Works

The ResurFX laser therapy works as a skin resurfacing treatment by using the heat energy from the laser to stimulate deeper layers of the skin to produce new collagen and elastic fibers. As the new collagen is produced, your skin becomes firmer, tighter, more even, and more youthful. Columns of damaged tissue are exfoliated from the surface, leaving the surrounding skin intact. This unique approach decreases healing times while also stimulating the body’s own healing process for longer-lasting, more natural results.

The tiny marks created by the laser enable a safer treatment and more rapid recovery, while the penetrating laser ensures deep, effective rejuvenation in just the first session.

Depending on the area being treated, fractional laser therapy can take anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes. For patients with more extensive damage or a larger treatment area, the session can take up to 2 hours.

What To Expect During Your ResurFX Laser Skin Resurfacing Treatment

At Aesthetically Yours, all laser treatments are administered with your safety, comfort, and aesthetic goals in mind. Although most patients do not find this treatment painful, a light topical anesthetic can be applied to the targeted area to ensure your comfort. Additionally, we will place a pair of special glasses over your eyes to protect your eyes from the laser’s bright light.

Before your treatment, the targeted area will be thoroughly cleansed and removed of all oil and debris.

We will then adjust the laser’s settings to tailor the treatment to the specific needs of your skin and then pass the laser handpiece over the targeted area. ResurFX treatments require a single pass, and for most patients, treatment takes about 30 minutes to complete, depending on the size and number of areas being treated.

You may feel a light tapping against the skin, which is the laser at work. Some warmth is also normal but should never be uncomfortable or unbearable. Most patients find it quite relaxing as they sit there and allow their skin to be pampered. Not only will your skin look rejuvenated, but you’ll feel rejuvenated as well.

What To Expect During A ResurFX Laser Skin Resurfacing Recovery

Expect mild redness and swelling in the treated area for the next few days during your recovery. Patients can return to their normal activities the following day. Recovery time is relatively short and comfortable. You must avoid sun exposure before and after treatment by wearing sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or high with the addition of protective clothing. Once the skin is completely healed, be sure to continue to protect your skin by applying an SPF every day for long-term protection and to prevent any reoccurring damage to the skin.

When To Expect to See the Results of ResurFX Laser Resurfacing Treatment

Results will gradually appear as the skin produces new collagen over time. Most patients will begin to see changes in their skin within 1 to 2 weeks, with continued improvements over the next 3 to 4 months. For optimal results in trouble areas, a series of treatments may be recommended and spaced about one month apart, although this can vary between patients and their goals.

Laser Skin Resurfacing FAQs

Laser resurfacing treatments aren’t for everyone. Your doctor might caution you against laser treatment if you have the following:

  • Active acne
  • Tanned or darker skin
  • Deep, dynamic wrinkles
  • Excessive skin sagging
  • History of keloid scars
  • Are prone to cold sores
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Connective tissue disease, autoimmune disease, or weak immune system

Patients with darker complexions have a greater risk of experiencing issues with hyperpigmentation due to melanin absorbing the light from the laser. During your consultation at Aesthetically Yours, your skin will be thoroughly examined, and our licensed skin experts will help you decide on the safest, most effective skin rejuvenation option. Darker skin tones may need to be pre-treated with a skin lightener to reduce post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Laser skin resurfacing treatments do fall into the category of non-invasive; however, they pose a few risks, especially for patients with sensitive skin. These side effects include:

  • Redness, swelling, or itching. Treated areas can swell, itch, or burn slightly immediately after your appointment, but these side effects should resolve on their own after a few hours. For some, redness can be intense and last for several weeks.
  • Acne. During the recovery period, thick creams and bandages applied to the skin can worsen acne inflammation or temporarily develop tiny white bumps (milia) in the treated areas.
  • Infection. Laser skin resurfacing treatments can lead to viral, fungal, or bacterial infections. The most common condition that occurs after laser treatments is the herpes virus, which most commonly presents itself as cold sores. In most cases, the herpes virus is present in dormant skin. If you are prone to cold sores, mention this information to your doctor before undergoing treatment to help you begin preventative measures to help prevent a breakout.
  • Hyperpigmentation. Laser skin resurfacing treatments can cause treated areas to become darker than before or, in some cases, lighter. Permanent changes in skin color mainly occur in patients with darker complexions. Talk with your doctor about laser resurfacing techniques that can help reduce this risk.

ResurFX laser skin resurfacing treatments are among the safest and most effective treatments. Where some laser skin treatments use infrared light, which can have a greater risk of producing hyperpigmentation. This laser uses short, concentrated bursts of light energy that can be adjusted into the shape, size, and direction needed for a more personalized and precise treatment.

There are a few important differences between laser resurfacing and microneedling treatments that come down to how the two treatments work to rejuvenate the skin. Lasers specifically target areas in the skin that they aim to treat, such as broken red veins, brown spots, or acne scars, without damaging surrounding tissues.

Microneedling is a more invasive skin rejuvenating treatment that creates thousands of tiny micro-channels all over the treatment area that trigger the body’s natural healing mechanisms.

If you want to be more proactive about treating your skin’s issues, microneedling is quick and easy. However, if you have specific problems that you would like to address, your goals may be better suited for laser resurfacing treatments. It is worth mentioning that these treatments create beautiful results when used together. We can treat specific skin issues with ResurFX treatments, then perform microneedling for all-over skin rejuvenation either the same day or you can alternate treatments monthly.

ResurFX laser treatment can take years off your complexion. The heat from the laser triggers your body’s production of youthful proteins like collagen and elastin, which help to reduce signs of aging, such as deep wrinkles, fine lines, acne or other facial scars, dull complexion, and roughness.

Immediately after your treatment, your skill will appear red and feel sunburned. Redness, swelling, and itching may be present for the first few days. Recovery time from laser resurfacing treatments with ResurFX is minimal. Your skin will appear red for 24 to 48 hours, and you’re free to return to normal activities, including wearing makeup without having to worry about peeling, flaking, or scabbing.
