What Causes Hyperpigmentation?

What sets IPL apart from the competition is that it smooths your skin’s texture and corrects hyperpigmentation by creating micro-injuries in the skin where the light from the laser can target and break apart the melanin or fibers that are causing the issues. Most other solutions only target one of these problems.

Hyperpigmentation develops due to an array of factors, including age, environmental elements, and certain skin conditions. If you have tanned for many years, spent a lot of time outdoors, or are exposed to pollution or wind regularly, you’re at a heightened risk of developing hyperpigmentation issues early in life.

What Is Photofractional (IPL and Laser Resurfacing)?

Photofractional™ is a complete skin rejuvenation solution that enables your technician to treat a wide range of skin concerns in one treatment. Skin ailments can include anything from:

  • sunspots
  • age spots
  • broken capillaries
  • acne scarring
  • fine lines
  • improve pores and skin texture
  • stretch marks

The treatment can be performed nearly anywhere on the body, including the face, neck, chest, arms, legs, hands, and even the abdomen. Photofractional™ combines the power of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and ResurFX™ non-ablative laser resurfacing. When combined, this powerful duo can simultaneously improve skin texture and skin tone in the same treatment.

Benefits

How Does Photofractional™ Rejuvenation Work?

IPL Photofractional technology uses wavelengths of light that target the pigment and superficial blood vessels in your skin. Dark, spots, sun damage, and broken capillaries absorb the energy from the Lumenis M22 IPL. As a result, pigment damage progressively lightens, and broken blood vessels close down and eventually disappear, revealing clear, youthful skin.

ResurFX™ uses the power of fractionated laser beams to create a grid of tiny thermal injuries on the surface of the skin. Your laser technician will control the depth of your treatment to address common concerns such as acne scarring, enlarged pores, and stretch marks. ResurFX™ also triggers the production of new collagen and elastin fibers in the deeper layers of your skin, which helps with anti-aging results as well.

What To Expect From A Photofractional™ IPL Laser Resurfacing Treatment At Aesthetically Yours

All photofractional™ treatments start with a thorough consultation. Our Thousand Oaks skin specialists will evaluate the degree of your skin condition and confirm that Photofractional™ treatments are right for you. During your initial visit, they will also determine the correct level of laser to use on your skin and how many treatments are needed to meet your individual goals.

To ensure you are comfortable, we will apply a topical numbing cream to your skin before your treatment and may also use cooling air to ease some of the heat that might come from the laser. Depending on your treatment plan, you can expect the session to last anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes. You may experience a warm or prickling sensation as the laser is applied to the skin, but the treatment is gentle and should not feel uncomfortable.

Following your first session, you should begin to notice improvements in skin tone and pigmentation. Typically, about three sessions are needed before improvements are seen in the skin texture and fine lines. Optimal results are achieved after 3 to 5 treatments separated by 6-week intervals. You will, however, continue to see improvements for up to 6 weeks following the Photofractional™ treatment.

What To Expect After a Photofractional™ IPL Treatment?

Immediately following treatment, patients typically experience some redness, irritation, or swelling, depending on their customized treatment. The swelling should resolve itself after a few hours, and the redness will fade over the next few days. Most patients can resume their daily activities on the same day. It is advised that patients stay out of direct sunlight for a few weeks following the treatment and always apply sunscreen once their skin is healed to prevent sunspots from returning.

Be sure to follow all of your skin specialists’ instructions for aftercare, including how to cleanse your healing skin and what kind of products can be applied to promote healing. If you notice your skin is scabbing, peeling, or itching at all during the healing process, it’s important that you don’t intervene in this healing process by scratching or picking. Allow the skin to shed the damaged skin on its own and reveal the radiant, fresh skin underneath.
